SSC SERVICE SOLUTIONS Newsletter APRIL/ MAY 2019

Many of our longtime associates have happily noted the return of the Fairness Triangle in our 50th Anniversary Logo. For those who are unfamiliar with the green triangle: It serves as a visual reminder that our founder, Baxter Lee, created as the framework for our business endeavors. This is best represented by an equilateral triangle representing the three most significant components of our company. SSC’s mission is t o provide the best services and greatest value to our customers , growth and prosperity for our employees , and profit for our company .

Grounds Tips for your Home: Good M orning Do it Yourselfers! A brief tip on landscape management : Here are two pictures : one is of shrubs that are individually sheared into little balls and the second group as a managed mass planting which is the designers intent. Why do folks feel they have to work three times as hard and shear these balls or boxes of shrubs when the intent was to have a mass planting? This drives me absolutely crazy and there is not a single landscape that we manage that does not have this. Rome wasn’t changed in a day and neither will our landscapes, but we are working on that and will get there. Remember, just because the other person managed it for years that way doesn’t make it right!

This April students took a break from their studies to partner with SSC to get their hands dirty by planting trees and creating a sanctuary on campus for butterflies and bees. Matt Rich, our grounds manager at UASF, partnered with student groups to construct a flower garden of pollinator friendly flowers. The Green Team is in their first year as a registered student organization and already we are seeing themmake an impact on their world as they raise awareness about sustainability to help make UASF a greener campus. The flowers planted included bee balm, delphinium, phlox, alyssum, delph, hyssop, catmint, lavender, borage, and tansy. Special thanks to all of the organizations that partnered to help lead UASF to a greener tomorrow: Green Team, Garden Club, and Pi Kappa Pi Fraternity, Tree Campus USA Committee, and the UAFS Student Veterans Organization.

On Arbor Day over 500 free trees were distributed on campus and to the local community. “It is important to reflect on how crucial the trees are to our campus and our community,” said Rich. “Without conserving such natural beauty, our spaces for learning and growing would be less enjoyable.” The complementary trees, donated by the Arkansas Forestry Commission, will include Northern Red Oak, Loblolly Pine and Cypress varieties, all of which can be seen in their mature form on the UAFS campus. Mature trees can absorb up to 48 pounds of carbon dioxide in a year, making them essential for air quality as well as natural beauty.

A shining example to us all We work behind the scenes doing our jobs so teachers and students can thrive in their environment. it is great to see one of our associates receive the appr ciation they truly deserve. Joe Van Cleave, the unit director at Montgomery ISD, on multiple

occasions had the administration at Lincoln Elementary tell him how much they loved Jessica Frear, so when he received a call requesting his presence he was a little unsure what would follow. Joe walked in to a first grade classroom filled with students, teachers, and administrators hiding with the lights off. He was instructed to call Jessica over the radio for a clean up in the classroom. Upon enter ing she was greeted with an enthusiastic “Surprise!” The teacher explained that because of Jessica’s selfless actions they wanted to make sure she knew she had not gone unseen. The class presented Jessica with hand written thank you cards from the students along with a huge gift basket containing candles, lotion, and other items including a pocket filled with gift cards. It is obvious Jessica is loved and that love is reciprocated through her to the students she takes care of. Thank you Jessica Frear for all the hard work you do!

We never grow tired of hearing how much the our clients and community love the people who work at SSC...because we do too!

I’d like to take this opportunity to brag on one of the Service Solutions employees.  His name is Michael Simmons .  Each morning, after making his early morning rounds and checking payroll, he comes by Jerger Elementary School and tutors several 5th grade students in math and science.  Mr. Simmons helps the students by checking homework, reteaching some skills, and reviewing for assessments.  Sometimes, I think the students come by the office just to talk with Mr. Simmons.  He knows each student by name and makes each one feel important and confident.  Mr. Simmons never expects recognition for his volunteering, but someone needs to know just how wonderful and helpful he is! Lawana Rayburn, Principal Jerger Elementary School

I just wanted take this opportunity to nominate Michelle Garcia as the SSC Senior Director and Company Therapist of the Year! She is absolutely awesome! She doesn’t do what she does for recognition, but only for the greater good of the Company! She didn’t pay me to say these things; I came up with them all by myself! :)   Have a wonderful weekend! Thanks, Andrew Hill Business Manager-TASD
